Joyous Learning In the Library
Meet the Library Staff
Erin Black, Librarian
As the K-5 librarian at L'Ouverture, I am passionate about creating an inviting space where all students feel seen, inspired, and eager to explore new worlds through books. My journey to becoming a librarian began with a love for stories and a commitment to nurturing lifelong readers. I earned my bachelor's degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Middle School Mathematics from the University of Louisville, Kentucky, an ESOL endorsement from Newman University, and I am completing a Master’s in Educational Technology with an emphasis in School Library Media Licensure from Pittsburg State University. Through these experiences, I have developed a deep understanding of literacy’s impact on young minds. Today, I have the privilege of working with a vibrant student body, and I’m dedicated to connecting each child with books that reflect their unique identities, backgrounds, and aspirations.
In our library, we celebrate diversity, encourage curiosity, and promote a lifelong love for reading. We offer a rich collection of books and programming that reflect the lives and cultures of our community, giving students a space to both see themselves and learn about others. I believe that "reading is the gateway skill that makes all other learning possible" (Barack Obama) and "the best way to empower young minds is by helping them fall in love with books" (Jacqueline Woodson). Every book opens up new possibilities, and I am honored to support my students’ growth as readers, thinkers, and dreamers. Feel free to email me with ideas for programs and partnerships for our school and library.
Guide to Book Care
- Keep your books in a safe place.
- Return your books on time.
- Do not eat or drink while reading library books.
- Wash and dry your hands before reading library books.
- Keep books away from pets and little ones. They do not know how to take care of books!
- Never draw or write in a library book!
- Always use a bookmark!
- If the library book has been damaged, bring it to your librarian. They will repair it if they can. DO NOT REPAIR THE BOOK YOURSELF! Your librarian has the right tools and training to fix books.
- If you lose your book or it is damaged while in your care, you will need to pay to replace it. Talk to your librarian.
